"In essence, industries will need to align on shared methodologies and manufacturers will need to embrace the principle to share their product carbon footprint data with their partners along the value chain. As BASF, we are sharing our know-how on determining the carbon footprint of products and we are actively engaged in numerous industry and cross-industry consortia to foster the alignment on a common lifecycle assessment methodology. And being a value chain partner to almost all industries, BASF needs a harmonized data exchange eco-system, which fosters collaboration and integration across technology solutions and product value chains. This is the great achievement of the Partnership for Carbon Transparency by WBCSD. Because only with the correct information at hand can we take effective action."

About BASF:

BASF's mission is to create chemistry for a sustainable future. The business is divided into the Chemicals, Materials, Industrial Solutions, Surface Technologies, Nutrition & Care and Agricultural Solutions segments.
As one of the world’s largest chemical companies, BASF is present in 91 countries with 239 production sites worldwide.

BASF decarbonization targets:

BASF has committed to reducing its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 25% by 2030 compared with 2018. BASF has also committed to reducing specific Purchased Goods and Services (Scope 3 Cat 1) emissions by 15% compared with 2022. In the long term, BASF has committed to achieve Net Zero by 2050 on Scope 1, 2 and Scope 3 Cat 1 emissions.

Being a partner to both PACT and TfS, we want to play a crucial role on this journey and further contribute to the use of primary-data-based PCFs and developing low PCF solutions.

Why BASF joined PACT:

Only if industries follow the same methodology, PCF values will be comparable. We are working with various partners and associations to promote standardization of PCF methodologies, e.g. Together for Sustainability (TfS) and PACT. We launched our global Supplier CO2 Management Program in 2021. After gaining transparency, we want to work with our suppliers on solutions to reduce product-related emissions and establish the PCF as a criterion for purchasing decisions.

Progress and achievement with PACT:

We have successfully integrated PACT-conformant requirements into our inhouse 3rd party validated PCF platform, establishing certified, product-level CO2 transparency for our customers. By the end of 2024, all key suppliers will have been onboarded to supply PCF data

Impact of collaboration:

As part of the program, we have engaged more than 300 suppliers, receiving more than 1000 PCFs of inorganic and organic chemical raw materials, which enabled us to to gain more transparency on our Scope 3 emissions and our suppliers’ individual products. We support our suppliers in determining PCFs, for example, by sharing our knowledge of calculation methods with them.

Future for collaboration with PACT:

Interoperability: We need a harmonized data exchange eco-system and integration across technology solutions, allowing seamless data exchange between PACT-conformant systems, thus facilitating collaboration across sectors.

Empowering all actors in the ecosystem: Being a partner to both PACT and TfS, we want to play a crucial role on this journey and further contribute to the use of primary-data-based PCFs and developing low PCF solutions.

First step is to engage and help suppliers with implementing PACT-conformant PCF calculations, leveraging technology solutions, such as automated PCF software.

Guiding insights for sustainability:

Capability building amongst suppliers is key: First step is to engage and help suppliers with implementing PACT-conformant PCF calculations, leveraging technology solutions, such as automated PCF software.

Data quality essential to ensure comparability: Work on improving data quality and verification mechanisms in order to increase comparability and accuracy.
