Aluminium Carbon Footprint Methodology
This document specifies the principles, requirements and methodologies for quantifying and communicating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from primary aluminum production processes and associated cradle-to-gate partial carbon footprints. This is a valuable resource for bauxite and/or other ores, alumina and aluminum producers (their customers and other stakeholders) to calculate and communicate harmonized and comparable carbon footprints of a product or set of products. The methodology represents a specified approach to the aluminum sector and its products and is aligned with international (ISO) standards for environmental management and GHG calculation.
Characterization factor
The current version of the guidance does not mandate a specific GWP, but GWP values used must be disclosed
To align with PACT Methodology: Use the latest version of the IPCC Assessment Report publication as indicated in Chapter 3.2.1 of the PACT Methodology
Exemption rule
The current version of the guidance has an exemption rule of max. 1% of emissions at individual attributable processes, there is no cumulative threshold
To align with PACT Methodology: Follow the max. 5% cumulative on PCF as indicated in Chapter 3.3.1.2 of the PACT Methodology
Allocation
The current version of the guidance specifies allocation for different production steps
Biogenic emissions and removals
Not been relevant for this product, so not currently included . Some innovations are currently researched and the aim is to be included in version 3.0.
Recycling and energy recovery
The current version of the guidance does not specify recycling and energy recovery requirements
To align with PACT Methodology: Use the recycled content method as indicated in Chapter 3.3.2.3 of the PACT Methodology
Validity period
The current version of the guidance recommend to update PCFs at least in a 5-year cycle or whenever a significant change occurs in the production process or any other parameters affecting the PCF
To align with PACT Methodology: Follow the 3-year cycle or earlier if > 10% variance criteria as indicated in Chapter 6.1.2.1 of the PACT Methodology
Data quality metrics
The current version of the guidance does not mandate the calculation of any specific data quality metrics
To align with PACT Methodology: Use the data quality metrics as indicated in Chapter 4.2 of the PACT Methodology
Assurance and verification
The current version of the guidance does not include specific requirements about the level and basis for assurance and verification
To align with PACT Methodology: Follow the requirements specified in Chapter 5 of the PACT Methodology
